5 dishes to give your Christmas menu a spicy Mexican twist

Whatever you’re planning for the holidays, food plays a big part in festive traditions and celebrations.

But have these traditional dishes started to get a bit bland? Maybe it’s time to consider spicing up your meals with a taste of traditional Mexico!

Rich in culture, Mexican cuisine boasts an enchanting palette of flavours, vibrant colours and an incredible mix of textures. Let’s dig into the top 5 festive dishes that will have your taste buds tingling this festive season.

1. Pavo – traditional roasted turkey

It doesn’t matter where you celebrate, a roasted turkey will always be the centrepiece of a traditional Christmas dinner, as is in Mexico.

Since turkey is native to the country, it naturally is the popular choice for festive feasts. Whether you serve it stuffed with flavourful seasonable vegetables or with mole - a delicious sauce made with hot chillies and rich chocolate, it’s sure to be a show-stopper.

2. Rosca de Reyes – sweet bread

A special Christmas treat that typically starts appearing in the displays of Mexican bakeries, Rosca de Reyes is best known as the King’s Cake.

Shaped like a wreath, Rosca de Reyes is a sweet bread topped with candied fruit or cherries and, baked with a baby figurine on the inside.

Generally, when friends and family get together to eat rosca, the person who receives the slice with the baby figurine is expected to host a party on Día de la Candelaria.

3. Tamales – filled corn-based dough

During Christmas-time, Mexican families traditionally come together in the kitchen to roll a special holiday food called Tamales.

A traditional way to enjoy the cornmeal dumplings, Tamales are generally stuffed with sweet potatoes, pork or chicken and, then wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves before it is steamed.

4. Buñuelos – a paper-thin sweet tortilla

A popular holiday dessert among Mexicans, Buñuelos are crispy traditional Mexican fritters that are sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and served with spiced brown syrup.

It’s easy to make and can be found in street markets all over Mexico. Don’t be afraid to ‘fry’ them at home over the festive season.

5. Ponche Navideño – fruity, spicy and strong Christmas punch

No Christmas feast is complete without ponche! Ponche Navideño is a fruit punch typically made with cinnamon, an apple-like fruit called tejocotes, as well as seasonal fruit, raisins, walnuts and brandy.

Meant to be served piping hot, the drink is an essential part of Christmas in Mexico.
