Genetic Sexual Attraction
Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) describes a sexual attraction between relatives who meet for the very first time as adults.

Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) is a term that describes the phenomenon of sexual attraction between close relatives, such as siblings, first and second cousins or a parent and offspring who meet for the first time as adults.

CapeTalk's Sara-Jayne king gives reference to a widely publicised news of an Oklahoma woman who has been given 10 years of probation after admitting she had a sexual relationship with her biological mother.

Clinical psychologist, Konrad van Staden says statistics show that GSA happens to one in about a million people.

It is far more common in terms of the actual experience, but the underlying feelings without it going over into an act is far more common than that.

Konrad van Staden, clinical psychologist

Van Staden says studies have shown that humans have an almost automatic in-build mechanism that stops us from having a relationship with a parent or sibling. However, there is another component that makes this an attractive option.

He also speaks about 'commonality' that usually takes place at an unconscious level where people look for someone that understands them.

We seek to find somebody that can understand us and who better than a sibling or a parent.

Konrad van Staden, clinical psychologist

If you find that somebody hasn't developed very well, and they have a deep yearning for somebody to know them, understand them and a deep sense of affection for their sibling or child, that's often blurred with sexual stimulation where they are unable to understand the separation because of their own personal development.

Konrad van Staden, clinical psychologist
