Court battles may threaten December ANC conference - Karima Brown

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has had to push back its elective conference following the Bloemfontein High Court’s decision to stop it from going ahead on Friday, bringing into question the provincial general council held on Monday.

Branch general meetings held in four regions over the last four months have been ruled unconstitutional, unlawful, irregular and in breach of the ANC constitution.

Meanwhile, a leave to appeal the September ruling which nullified the Kwazulu-Natal ANC's executive will be heard on Thursday.

Political analyst Karima Brown says this may impact the legitimacy of the December conference.

The problem of course is that the PEC as you know it don't exist so the fact that they convened this PGC of branches trying to nominate Nkosazna Dlamini Zuma does present us with a problem. So you could actually have further legal action in the area.

The other thing is the ANC's constitution say you have to have seven days before a BGM is held. The new date for the BGM doesn't allow for that.

It's a tricky situation, I don't think that the way in which the existing leadership there is going to comply with the court matter is going to get them out of trouble I think it is going to get them further into trouble.
