Brett Herron in tears after experiencing what the poor go through on Metrorail

Mayco member for transport in the City of Cape Town, Brett Herron, took a train ride from Khayelitsha to the City centre on Thursday morning.

Metrorail has been inundated with many problems, often leaving commuters stranded with no means to get to work or home.

Herron says for the past months he has been receiving messages accompanied by pictures of a poor and deteriorating service.

He shared his experience of travelling on a train with CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, and says the journey took him 3 hours from Khayelitsha to the city centre.

I spoke to the commuters and their stories are absolutely horrifying. I am so angry and you won't believe the amount of tears I have shed in those three hours listening to people and experiencing it.

Brett Herron, CoCT Mayco member for transport

It's most shocking, a crime against the poor, and we absolutely have to do something as a society and the City of Cape Town.

Brett Herron, CoCT Mayco member for transport

The City of Cape Town must become the rail authority. I have no confidence that National Department of Transport or Prasa is going to get it right.

Herron says on his next trip he will be taking business owners and CEOs for them to see what their employees are experiencing on a daily basis.
