Eskom: 'Everything is OK we don't have a crisis, no load shedding anticipated'

Leaked documents from Eskom's minutes revealed that the Gupta-owned Tegeta is threatening to cut coal supply to the utility, demanding that Eskom increase the amount it pays for coal.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe has confirmed that indeed a meeting was held with Tegeta on Friday but the utility has refused to renegotiate the contract.

They have said initially to us that they are experiencing difficulties to extract coal, meaning that at some point they might have to stop supply. We have said to them if that is the case, we might have to invoke the legal recourse, but so far they are still continuing to supply us with coal.

Khulu Phasiwe, Spokesperson

We can't change this contract midway especially because it is coming to an end next year.

Phasiwe responded to reports of missing coal at the Hendrina Power Station. According to reports, Hedrina Power Station has a seven-day coal stockpile.

He says that the management of Hendrina reported that it could be left with a stockpile of less than 10 days, which is in violation of the regulations which states that there should be a stockpile of 20 days for the station to run without interruptions.

The management have tasked the people operating the power station to go back and do an audit of the coal stockpile that we have there.

Khulu Phasiwe, Spokesperson

The Eskom management has asked other plants to also conduct audits on their coal stockpile to avoid the same situation currently happening at Hendrina.

Phasiwe says at the moment they are not anticipating load shedding as they are doing everything in their power to ensure the smooth running of the power utility.

So far everything is OK we don't have a crisis there... the issue is for us to make sure that we have the necessary coal levels at our power stations...
