If you’re heading to the mall or preparing to do some festive shopping, you will properly come across a person begging for food or money. The reality is that thousands of South Africans go hungry, yet we’re a nation that wastes up to ten million tons of food every year.
Founder of Agricolleges International Howard Blight argues that what’s happening in South Africa doesn’t make sense. He says that if you look at the world map on sustainable food production opportunity, South Africa rates well on that international platform.

Blight says that a high unemployment rate is a factor to consider. He adds that 50% of our community is urban based as people migrated from the rural environment to informal settlements.
We need to establish an African interpretation of urban agriculture says Blight.
