The everyday ordeals that South Africans go through, whether it is witnessing a woman being abused by her husband or gang violence that is experienced on the Cape Flats daily, make us live in fear.
This is according to trauma counselor, Claudia Burger.
She says when people constantly live in fear the part of your brain that helps us reason, shuts down. This means we basically live on survival instincts.
We are a society that is living in fear. When the brain is fear driven and there is too much secretion of a hormone called cortisol, the front part of the brain that's got to do with your reasoning, shuts down.— Claudia Burger, trauma counselor

It has been proven that only safe relations heal trauma, no amount of therapy or talking about it actually helps.— Claudia Burger, trauma counselor
Burger says we need to reset the clock in our society but it is going to take time to do that.
She recommends activities where the body can regulate itself in dealing with trauma, activities like yoga.
