Life Esidimeni: Selebano claims he first found out about deaths from Motsoaledi

Gauteng suspended health HOD Dr Barney Selebano took the stand on Tuesday at the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearing.

EWN reporter Masego Rahlaga says Selebano's lawyers told former Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke that they do not understand why he has to testify and that they do not believe his testimony will be of any help to the arbitration.

Rahlaga says Moseneke dismissed them, saying that the families of the dead mentally ill patients need answers from the people who played key roles in the death of their loved ones.

As HOD he said that the first time he found out that patients were dying was when he received a call from the health minister Aaron Motsoaledi in July last year.

He told him to move fast in taking out patients from Precious Angels.

Precious Angels was one of the NGOs identified by the health ombudsmen where most patients died.

According to Rahlaga, the families of the deceased came in their numbers and were very happy to see Selebano finally taking the stand.
