We are too shocked to even be angry - Nikki Bush opens up after husband’s murder

CAPE TOWN – On 18 November 2017, the Bush family was changed forever.

At around 3 am on that morning, Simon Bush went to check why his family dog was barking. But when he opened his door, the husband and father was senselessly shot and killed at their Douglasdale home.

His wife, Nikki Bush, a well-known author, has shared the details of the armed robbery and how it has affected her family.

Bush says she is grateful that her eldest son, Ryan, was not home during the incident.

“My youngest son, Matthew, who is writing matric, was held at gunpoint. I was, fortunately, able to lock myself in the bathroom with my cellphone and call for help. My eldest son, Ryan, was not home, thank goodness. Matthew and I were unharmed, and the intruders left with what they could carry.”

And while a police investigation is underway as reported by Eyewitness News, the family battles with the shock.

It’s understood the intruders took two laptops, two cellphones and a handbag.

Bush says they’re dealing with the trauma “moment by moment”.

“We are all extremely traumatised, and taking each day as it comes, moment by moment. We are still too shocked to even be angry, although we know this attack has shocked and angered so many of you, both near and far. We so appreciate and value the strength of your unity behind us. A murder investigation is underway, and we hope there will be closure.”

She has described her late husband as quiet and often an unwitting collaborator who helped with her work as a creative parenting expert and author.

While she has many questions after her husband’s murder, she has thanked everyone for their support during this time.

“Our heartfelt gratitude to so many of you who have taken the time to express your love, concern and support for me and my family. If I am quiet for a time, or you receive emails from someone else on my behalf, please understand while we mourn my husband, a gentle giant, who was such a wonderful dad to our two children.”

The family has called on people to support the DNA Project, which aims to fight crime in South Africa.

According to the 2016/2017 national crime statistics released in October, murder has gone up by 1.8% while aggravated robbery increased by 6.4%.

At the time, the Institute for Security Studies told EWN the risk of being murdered in South Africa had increased by 13% compared to five years ago.
