ANC 2017 Elective Conference

'Disingenuous for free education announcement to be made this morning'

Political writer Ranjeni Munusamy responds to the Higher Education Minister's statement promising free education for the poor, by saying that the whole issue is emotional blackmail.

She adds that Professor Mkhize's words were problematic as she referred to the issue 'saying that they are dealing with poor children’s lives.'

I think it’s really disingenuous for this announcement to be made this morning.

Ranjeni Munusamy, Political writer

Munusamy says that the commission report was announced months ago, and she says Michael Sach's who resigned from National Treasury in November, was the person that wanted to announce free education across the board.

'That wasn’t ANC or government policy so he needed to backtrack once South Africa was downgraded', says Munusamy.

In fact, government said then that free education was unsustainable.

The story year has already ended; the universities have been waiting for this announcement.

Ranjeni Munusamy, Political writer

Munusamy says that some universities announced their fee increase over the past few days because they were waiting to hear what the President was going to say on the matter.

The President didn’t bother about how the schooling year was going to affected by his announcement.
