ANC 2017 Elective Conference

Too early to tell the direction of the new leadership after #ANC54 NEC elections

The new president of the ANC Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his inaugural speech on Wednesday as the 54th ANC conference was being concluded.

Ramaphosa pledged a crackdown on corruption and reiterated the party’s resolutions to implement radical economic transformation to give the black majority a bigger state in the economy and provide free tertiary education.

There have been concerns over the fact that would Ramaphosa be able to recall President Jacob Zuma after being elected as the ANC president.

Many analyst have predicted that it won't be as easy as everyone anticipated given the fact that some members in the top six are Zuma's supporters.

Analysts also said that Ramaphosa needs to secure enough support among the 80 members of the NEC.

EWN reporter Gaye Davis says it is early to tell which direction the new NEC would take in supporting Ramaphosa's leadership in the ANC.

I can't say definitively but my sense was that we were seeing many old names being reappointed.

Gaye Davis, EWN parliamentary reporter

My sense is that we are seeing far more people who would not be interested in seeing Ramaphosa have the support and the ability to move things in the direction he would like.
