A list of local books that are a must-buy for Christmas

Owner of Bridge Books, Griffin Shea chats to Phemelo about their list of Bridge Books Christmas Selection for the ultimate festive read.

Shea says that there’s a new edition of 'Kwezi', the local superhero comic by Loyiso Mkize which is ideal for young people.

You see Azania, who’s the female lead in this series, taking on the giant that was captured from Senegal who’s trashing Gold City.

Shea says that he loves the series because the illustrations are fantastic, he adds that they incorporate life in Johannesburg.

It’s great to see local stories being propelled up.

For romance, I would recommend the book, 'The Blessed Girl' by Angela Makholwa says Shea. It involves the story of Bontle who’s a blessee he adds.

It is a bit of romance, it’s not a comedy – it’s satire.

Shea says that the author has touched on how the idea of being a blessee, is no longer frowned on. He adds that the social commentary is great as it touched on the changes of social norms, and their acceptance of gold diggers.
