98.76% pass rate for IEB matriculants

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric results were released today with a pass rate of 98.76%. IEB CEO Anne Oberholzer says despite people claiming the matric exams were too easy, they are regulated.

Oberholzer says the pass rate is a result of a group exam. Thus, the pass rate for specific subjects may differ, but changes when the results are out together.

98.76% is the result of a group exam. So in other words, performances in separate subjects will differ from that. So you may get a subject where the percentage of pass is 83% OR 84% - but once you put those results together with other results, then learners achieve the passing of the group exam.

Anne Oberholzer, CEO of IEB

Oberholzer says that both full time and part time students sit the IEB exams, but the pass rate is only determined by the full time students.

There were a total of 12 130 full time and part time students that wrote the exam. The group result comes only from the full time students. And that was 11 464.

Anne Oberholzer, CEO of IEB

When it comes to IEB's good performance in comparison to state education results, Oberholzer says it not necessarily because of the higher cost or level of teachers, it is about the dedication of learners and parents.
