Municipality supplying water tankers to Emfuleni residents amid water cuts

The Emfuleni Municipality says it has now provided water tanks to communities in the area left without any water supply over the past four days.

The municipality in the Vaal says it has been unable to settle its debt with Rand Water, which has resulted in thousands of residents being without water.

The municipality has so far paid approximately R150 million to Rand Water, says Emfuleni mayoral spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng.

Mofokeng says the high-lying areas in Emfuleni have been affected by the water cuts, amid a heatwave gripping Gauteng.

Areas affected by the water cuts for the last four days include Lakeside, Palm Springs and Evaton.

According to Mofokeng, unemployment in various communities has affected the municipality's ability to settle the water debt.

The municipality has had a contingency plan where we are providing water tankers to augment this crisis [sic].

Lebo Mofokeng, Emfuleni mayoral spokesperson

We have about five water tankers that are currently out. They are circulating thought the area to able to meet this commitment.

The municipality had to honour a payment of about R200 million to Rand Water. We had a short fall of about R50 million. We managed to pay just above R150 million.

Mayor Jacob Khawe is today expected to meet with Rand Water, the Minister of Water and Sanitation and Gauteng Premier to try to resolve the matter.
