Metrorail's Lillian Mofokeng says no fatalities in yet another train accident

The Gauteng Metrorail Spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng confirmed that 221 people were injured in Germiston when two trains collided on Tuesday morning.

She says there were no fatalities, but it is not yet clear what caused the trains to collide.

According to Mofokeng, both trains were travelling in the same direction at the same time. One was stationary when the other that was moving hit it from behind, she explains.

We do understand that there was cable theft around the area. However we are going to allow the investigation to continue to see if there was any linkage to the cable theft and this accident.

We don't want to rule out the possibility of human error and we also don't want to preempt the cause because others are speculating issues around infrastructure

The accident has not affected the commuters trains although there are currently delays of 40 - 60 minutes.
