How white, black or blue smoke can tell you what internal problems your car has

CAR Magazine Technical Editor Nicol Louw says that he received an interesting email a few weeks ago about a reader who had a car which recently started badly smoking when he accelerated.

Louw says that there are three colours that you can expect from a turbo diesel engine. When a diesel engine combusts, it runs with excess oxygen in the combustion chambers says Louw. He adds that when you go to full throttle, the oxygen becomes less.

Louw indicates that black smoke points to an incomplete combustion, or a complete lack of oxygen in the combustion process.

More serious problems will be low compression in the engine.

He adds that white smoke can either be diesel raw, which occurs when diesel enters into the exhaust. Louw says that the engine wouldn’t run well, which could indicate that water vapor has seeped into the car.

Louw says that you can smell blue smoke, he adds that blue smoke is indicative of oil consumption. It normally happens with high mileage says Louw.

The colours will tell you what the causes of the problem is.
