Opinion: Is railway transport still safe asks Ray White

702 host Ray White says increased railway accidents should be put on the political radar.

On Tuesday a train rear-ended a stationary locomotive at the Geldenhuys train station in Germiston, leaving over 200 people injured.

This incident follows the deadly Free State train crash last week where at least 19 people were killed and dozens more injured.

Reflecting on railway accidents over the last few years, White questions the safety of South Africa's trains.

Incidents have involved smashes at level crossings, power cable theft, trains colliding, crowded trains, people being knocked over.

Ray White, 702 anchor

This surely needs to be put onto the national political radar with efforts to investigate why railway transport is not as safe as it should be. There a number of factors that contribute to a poor track record, my question is though why is nothing being done about it?
