Metrorail staff staying away from central line until safety is guaranteed

Metrorail services are in the second day of suspension following the death of a 50-year-old Metrorail security guard who was killed in a robbery in Khayelitsha on Tuesday.

Metrorail Regional Manager, Richard Walker says the Metrorail staff is still traumatised by the incident and very concerned about their safety in the area.

The staff are understandably shaken by it, asking themselves who will be next?

Richard Walker, Metrorail Regional Manager

Walker says they tried to resume service on the central line on Wednesday with the help of the police but the union has advised the staff not to go through the central line until there has been a discussion with Prasa senior executives.

We are still engaging and try to see how we can re-introduce service but we also understand and appreciate the feeling of our staff.
