Police inaction on child rape suspect frustrating Tafelsig community

Police have yet to arrest the man suspected of raping a nine-year-old Tafelsig girl, leaving the Mitchells Plain community angry and confused.

Three cases of child rape have been reported in Tafelsig since December, the Mitchells Plain Impact Association (MPIA) says.

MPIA chairperson Joanie Fredericks says community members have had enough and are tired of living in fear.

Outraged residents were involved in mob justice attack last week and took to the streets in protest on Monday.

Fredericks says child rape appears to be on the rise in the area, but claims the scourge is not linked to gangsterism.

She says there were zero gangsters among the perpetrators involved in 25 child rape court cases in 2017.

Fredericks says most rapists are people known to the victims.

The mood in the community is deeply sombre.

People have had enough... They feel helpless and fearful for their own children.

They feel that they have nowhere to turn. Unfortunately they don't trust the justice system and the police.
