Mentors help vulnerable young people prepare for life after children's homes

The South African Youth for Education for Sustainability Trust (Sayes) is a non-profit organisation established to mentor young people toward a better future.

According to Michelle Potter, executive director for Sayes Mentoring Volunteers Organisation, the programme is designed to serve young people who live in children's home to help them prepare for when they turn 18-years-old and leave the shelters.

These are children who have been taken away from their families by the courts due to neglect.

However, there is nothing in place to provide support for these young people for when they leave.

Sayes involves volunteers who would like to make a difference in the society and match them with one person living in a children's home.

They meet on a weekly basis to help them with launching a career, where they going to stay afterward and integration with their families.

This is the first positive relationship they have with an adult outside the staff at the children's home and their teachers.

It is really a wonderful experience for this young people to be matched with somebody who wants to give them some support.
