EFF member shares inspirational story behind being young & politically conscious

Leigh Ann Mathys is a Member of the National Assembly and Treasurer General for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Mathys explains that she has always loved the nature of danger and thrill.

When I was 3 years old, my brother and I were rolling in a drum which resulted in me being scrolled at by my mother because of all the dust and bruises I ended up receiving says Mathys. She adds that she loves doing crazy things like bungee jumping, and skydiving.

I hate being scared about things, that’s my biggest thing. Anything I’m really scared of, I have to go do it.

Mathys says that she became conscious about what’s happening in South Africa when she was in Standard 5. My teacher refused to teach because of Mandela’s imprisonment and explained to us what was happening she adds.

That sort of gave me that political consciousness of what was going on in the country.

Mathys says that in the coloured community she grew up in, there was always this sense of entitlement and superiority towards the black majority. She adds that black individuals would knock at your door and ask for food or employment.

I remember one day my uncle popped in and there were two ladies in the house. He was so mad, and he called my mom because I let people in the house and I’m feeding them.

Mathys says that she didn’t understand why black people had to eat outside, or why they had to sit in certain places. She adds that some people don’t want to admit their prejudice, and others might just be ashamed of the past.
