[LISTEN] 'I don't know Captain KGB' - Khomotso Phahlane
Former acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says he has no link to former crime intelligence officer Morris Tshabalala and had no role in his appointment.
An alleged rogue cop and convicted armed robber, nicknamed 'Captain KGB', Tshabalala was arrested outside the correctional services head office in Pretoria as he was reporting to his parole officer.
Tshabalala was convicted of armed robbery in 1996 but never reported to prison. He went on to join the police’s crime intelligence unit.
He eventually spent just two years in jail, only to be released on parole, and walked back into his job in 2015.
It is understood Tshabala's reappointment could only have been sanctioned by the national police commissioner at the time.
It is regrettable that such blatant lies would be peddled in the public domain without anyone even trying to locate me to get my view on the matter. For record purposes, I don't even know what Captain KGB, Morris Tshabalala looks like.Khomotso Phahlane, Former acting police commissioner
I have not appointed the person. I don't even know the person. It is bizarre for anyone to suggest any link between me and Captain Tshabalala.Khomotso Phahlane, Former acting police commissioner
I have got no knowledge of the appointment. Appointments are not only made by the national commissioner , appointments are facilitated through the HRM environment and appointments are delegated to a level.Khomotso Phahlane, Former acting police commissioner
I don't know what is this thing of wanting to bring Phahlane into everything else that is happening in the police.Khomotso Phahlane, Former acting police commissioner
