Nehawu Wits acting secretary Tumisho Madihlaba says negotiations with management deadlocked resulting in a strike.

Members of the National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) at Wits university have embarked on a strike following a deadlock in salary negotiations.

Nehawu Wits acting secretary Tumisho Madihlaba says they are demanding a 9% salary increase. In addition, they are demanding that workers in the lowest salary grade be moved to mid-point.

At this point, we are asking the management to consider the plight of the lowest paid workers.

The management is offering 6.8% for workers within category 5 to level 16 and for these lowest paid workers they are only offering 8%.

Madihlaba says at this stage, it doesn't look like an agreement will be reached soon because the management walked out of a meeting where he had hoped they would find solutions.

We have downed tools. We are on strike. Unfortunately for the management, one of our sister unions will be embarking on a strike this afternoon.
