We’re not monkeying around – the first primates have been cloned in China

In the world of Science, two baby monkeys in China have been successfully cloned. Dr Chris Smith, also known as The Naked Scientist chats to Eusebius about the ground-breaking news and how it came to be.

Dr Smith says that what unfolded in China has made enormous headlines in the world, he adds that when the news was published, it was a first in Science because the two moneys are the first primates to be cloned.

They are interested in doing this to try and understand the embryology of how humans form.

Dr Smith says that the big news this week was around the Chinese scientist’s ability to succeed where others have failed because primates couldn’t be cloned until now.

Dr Smith adds that it took 79 embryo attempts before the creation of the two monkeys.

It’s an important story because it’s another milestone in our understanding of how cells, embryos and DNA all work together.
