The City of Cape town will launch its Disaster Operations Center (DOC) to implement the City’s Water Disaster Plan, which will take effect in the event of Day Zero.
According to Mayco member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith, senior officials from various departments spent the whole year drawing plans to prepare for the worst case scenario in terms of water shortages.
The DOC is designed in a way that would give the City an opportunity to take effective control of the water supply which will be cut of once dams reach a collective level of 13,5%.
Let me say this very loudly, Day Zero is avoidable, it is definitely not a forgone conclusion... If we are scrupulous with our water use and if we are fugal, and save water, we can entirely avoid Day Zero scenario.— JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security
Smith explains that the City is working on tapping into the aquifers to augment the city's water supply.
Assuming that Day Zero does arrive, he says that the city has been working on the collection points throughout the City. At the moment there are about 186 and the remaining 14 will be completed in this week.
We are making collection arrangements for people in institutions and old age homes and all the people in informal settlements will remain connected because they are already on stand pipes and we are making special arrangements for homeless shelters...— JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security
We are also keeping all the business and industrial areas connected.— JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security
