How to find alternatives to traffic lights, as Joburg JRA faces ongoing theft

The Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) has given up trying to run traffic lights at places like the Lion Park junction, or the off-ramp and on-ramp onto the N14 due to gangs stealing cables, wires and batteries.

The lights are constantly being stolen and two people guarding them were shot and killed in an attempted robbery.

Head of the Transport Department and Supply Chain Management at the University of Johannesburg Professor Jackie Walters chats about the possible solutions to the theft of traffic lights.

Professor Walters says that using a roundabout is a possible solution but it costs money to construct. He adds that the size of the intersection would determine the size of the circle.

Roundabouts can work but people must be aware that they are not as effective.

Professor Walters says that using people to navigate traffic is not a good long term solution. He adds that the problem needs to be challenged head on.

The long term solution would be to solve the issue of stolen stuff.
