A special meeting of the African National Congress National Executive Committee (NEC) will be held on Wednesday a day before the State of the Nation Address.
The ANC has never in its 106-year history held this meeting so close to Sona.
According to a statement released on Monday, the party says the special NEC will discuss preparations for the State of the Nation Address and a report back from the NWC on matters mandated to it, including management of the transition between the 5th and 6th administration of government and pending actions in Parliament.
Spokesperson for the African National Congress, Khusela Diko says the NEC is the highest decision making body within the ANC which has the power to ask the President to step down.
She declined to comment on whether the issue of recalling the president is on the agenda for the Wednesday meeting.
We have never pretended that there are no challenges with President Jacob Zuma continuing in office. You would remember that the last meeting of the NEC also raised these issues...— Khusela Diko, Spokesperson for the African National Congress
Like I have said, the main issue on the agenda is preparations for Sona and the NWC report on its meeting with Jacob Zuma.— Khusela Diko, Spokesperson for the African National Congress
All this is happening because the ANC has listened to the concerns of the South Africans.... it is a difficult time for the ANC but it's not a crisis.— Khusela Diko, Spokesperson for the African National Congress
If a vote of no confidence in President Zum is tabled in Parliament, Diko says the ANC would normally have a party position.
She says the ANC had made it clear that they do not want Zuma to humiliated, an exit should be managed in a manner that doesn't undermine President Zuma.
The ANC had always given direction in terms of the way the MPs would vote and there would be no difference even this time.— Khusela Diko, Spokesperson for the African National Congress
