South African international Pro cyclist ensures the inaugural Cyclopedia is great reading for the cycling community!

Winning the recent Tour Down Under was a great start to 2018 for professional South African cyclist Daryl Impey. But last week the 33 year old, who competes internationally for the UCI ProTeam Mitchelton-Scott team, continued his run of good form winning a record seventh national championship time trial title at the South African Championships in Oudtshoorn.

Impey, also last year’s champion over the 43.8km course, beat Dimension Data's Ryan Gibbons and third-place finisher Rohan de Ploy.

As an international athlete in top form, but someone with a good sense of the sport here in South Africa, Impey makes for a multifaceted guest for the inaugural edition of Cyclopedia. Driven by a passion for cycling, this monthly product aims to become a favourite source of news and information in the growing cycling community.

The Tour Down Under and National Time Trial accolades follow Impey's convincing win at the 21st edition of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge in November... crossing the finish line alone in 02:13:00.

It’s important to respect the race for what it is. If you're going to be racing with the elites, then go for it. And it’s still important to win here, it’s still nice to win here. That was a big box for me to tick... now I can at least say I've won it.

Daryl Impey, UCI ProTeam Mitchelton-Scott

In January Daryl became the first South African to claim the Tour Down Under crown. He wasn't the only South African to claim honours in Australia as Team Dimension Data's Nic Dlamini took the Subaru King of the Mountain title. Read all about Nic's subsequent visit to Cape Talk and interview with John Maytham here.

Cyclopedia is aimed at serving news, great products and advice to our massively engaged cycling community. Asked about a big issue in the sport currently, our guest editor was quick to pick up on road safety around cyclists...

I think the signs and safety in the country is why there is a massive decline in people cycling on our roads. And that’s why mountain biking has taken off. To rectify that is not going to be easy. It demands a bit of education for a lot of people.

Daryl Impey, UCI ProTeam Mitchelton-Scott

With no immediate solutions to this problem apparent, cyclists can look forward to an increasing number of road safety products like the Hovding Helmet with built-in airbag. Considering the failing state of many of our roads, and the number of near misses with impatient drivers, the R4500 pricetag (before delivery and import duties) might actually make sense!

Daryl's stellar start to the year was largely as a result of hard work invested in the off-season. And, as many of us emerge from a end-of-year break, it’s worthwhile to hear this Coach Parry podcast chatting about getting back into cycling training when you have had a lay off period. In 3 minutes cycling coach Devlin Eyden unpacks how long one can go without training before it becomes detrimental to your muscles and capacity to resume cycle training.

Looking to 2018 and beyond, Impey identified cycling's local administrators as holding a key to local cyclist's further success on the international stage...

Cycling South Africa select you for world champs overseas. But it's self funded, You have to get your own way there. No one phones to see if we are ok. Everyone is left there flapping around. If I was a junior, it would have been a horrible experience. From that point it was pretty shameful that the Federation couldn't put that together.

Daryl Impey, UCI ProTeam Mitchelton-Scott

_Cyclopedia wishes Daryl all the best for the rest of the 2018 season... Follow his achievements on twitter, here._

Cyclopedia will deliver to your inbox in the first week of each month. Look forward to entertaining guest editors, objective product reviews, training advice, event previews, special offers and more!
