ANC NEC meeting underway

The ANC NEC meeting is underway at the St George Hotel in Irene on Monday afternoon on the transition of President Jacob Zuma from office.

It could be a very short meeting or a very long meeting. It's been just over an hour now.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

He says usually the press is called in for a photo opportunity, but not so today so far.

Maybe because this is a special NEC meeting that probably only has one item on the agenda.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

He says Jessie Duarte, ANC deputy secretary general, did promise last week that the result would be made public immediately.

Manyathela says when trying to call Jacob Zuma's 'loyal supporters' for comment now, they all say they don't want to get involved.

One told me last week 'we can't defend this person forever.' So it will be interesting to see how all of that plays out in that NEC meeting.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Take a listen to the latest update on the exit process of Jacob Zuma:

EWN reporter Gia Nicolaides reports that hordes of journalists are waiting outside the St George Hotel.

She says they have been kept a fair distance away in the street and at this stage are just camping out waiting for something to happen.

Nicolaides says she thinks keeping the press outside the hotel car park and in the street, has helped the ANC NEC members elude any form of questioning from journalists.

It is not easy to see who is even in the particular cars pulling up outside the door at reception.
