[LISTEN] Biomimicry could be the answer to Cape Town’s water crises

Over centuries, we as people have taken many lessons from Mother Nature and the environment. The discussion around learning to preserve water is a topic that needs to be addressed considering Cape Town’s water crises.

Day Zero in Cape Town has moved to June but residents in the Mother City still need to limit consumption of water to less than 50 litres per person. To succeed in the conservation around water, we can learn a thing or two from a technique called biomimicry.

Claire Janisch is a certified biomimicry professional, and the founder of Biomimicry South Africa. She joined #WeekendBreakfast host Africa Melane to chat about what biomimicry is, and how it can help humans adapt to the environment.

Biomimicry is a term that refers to how humans can learn from nature in order to solve our challenges, but particularly our sustainability challenges.

Less than 1% of the species that have ever existed on this earth are still around, and this just means that those that have existed have a set of innovation principals that can assist anybody who wants to learn how to survive.

We need to be much more adaptive to existing contexts.
