Healthy affordable food eateries in and around Jozi

Let's pretend that we all strictly followed all the unrealistic 'new year, new me' goals we set for ourselves - then failed and had to realise that healthy eating shouldn't be a chore or something you put on your to-do list, but rather something you do naturally like breathe and blinking your eyes.

This week, fans celebrated with eTV's Scandal! actress Mapaseka Koetle-Nyokong who recently opened Gorge Grab n Go Cafe, a health-food takeaway spot in Johannesburg.

Mapaseka, who plays Dintle on the soapie, says Gorge is a franchise that sells healthy sandwiches, coffee, and smoothies. Everything is organic, fresh and free-range.

“After giving birth to my daughter I started living a very healthy lifestyle and I would frequent the franchise because that’s where I would buy the best health food – I fell in love with everything from the décor, the look and feel to the amazing sandwiches," she says.

“The restaurant idea came much later. My hubby is the one who always loved the food industry so he came with the idea of us opening our own restaurant,” Mapaseka adds. “My friends and family inspired me and motivated me to eat healthily and take care of myself and I wanted to share that with other people.”

Try some of the delicious food at Gorge Grab n Go Cafe on the corner of Stella and West Streets in Sandton.

Here are three other healthy yet affordable eateries to try in Joburg:

Wellness Cafe

Wellness Warehouse in Illovo has a remarkable selection of high-quality food, but it's quite pricey though. At the Wellness Café, make sure that you order the Wazoogles Smoothie Bowl for R50. For that price it's a substantial portion, it has nutritional carbs, healthy fats, protein, and fiber. Their ready to go meals are super healthy and reasonable - catering for gluten, sugar and lactose allergies too.

And the steamed buns are a must, loaded with protein, fats, and carbs. Kimchi ginger noodles are R120, and to-die-for. They’re low-calorie, high fiber, and nutrient-packed.

For R60, try the hot smoked trout fillet, pickled cucumber, and wasabi with their famous green papaya salad – also just R60!
