Human Settlements researcher, Esther Msindo says the demand for RDP houses continues to grow, but the supply from the government is slow, with Gauteng experiencing the highest backlog, followed by KwaZulu- Natal.
She says among the many other issues for the department not using up the R150 million, is one, a lack of understanding of the budget allocated to housing and two, the houses not being to the correct standard.
This demand is due to urban migration, not only rural migration. The population grows in most of the metropolitan areas. More than R3 million houses have been delivered to the poor, but the backlog continues because of this high demand.— Esther Msindo, Human Settlements Researcher
Msindo says since 1994 the government has done its best to give free housing to the needy.
