What a casino dealer's job entails: Azania chats to 2017's Dealer of the Year!

Neat chip handling, speed and your interaction with guests makes up only some of the prowess needed to be a good croupier, according to casino dealer, Tando Guzana.

Guzana was dubbed dealer of the year for 2017, after competing against 18 finalists from Tsogo Sun's 14 casino's around the country.

He sat down with Azania Mosaka to talk about dealing with difficult gamblers and the skill of chip handling.

The best thing to do when you work in such an environment is to leave your problems at the door, you cannot afford to bring them at work because you will snap. Those people are rude, those people they swear at you. But for me, I do understand them, I put myself in their shoes, I know they lose a lot of money. I try not to take it personally.

Aside from being quick at arithmetics, Guzana lists a number of skills you would need to make the best dealer.

Chip handling, it is a skill and when you dealing those cards you need to put them neatly. Your speed, you have to be fast. Your neatness and your smile.

Your interaction with your guests, that is the most important that outshines you. Don't focus too much on your work and not focus on your guest. They are not there to watch you do your job but they are there to be entertained while they lose.

Tando Guzana,Casino Dealer

While it is important to engage with the guest, don't get too personal, says Guzana.

We as dealers, we stand there and listen to them and empathise with them. That's it.
