Ajay Gupta's possible extradition may be costly for SA gov - Karyn Maughan eNCA

Fugitive Ajay Gupta has been seen in India, according to media reports there.

eNCA's Karyn Maughan says there has been speculation over whether the Gupta brother is still in the country.

He is wanted by the Hawks and there is a reward for any information leading to his arrest.

Ajay Gupta is wanted in connection with the fraud and money laundering investigation related to the Estina dairy farm project in the Free State.

Last week, officials at OR Tambo confirmed that records show that Gupta left the airport on a Dubai-bound Emarites flight in early February.

It's understood that authorities placed alerts at all borders with a notice for the Hawks' warrant of arrest, Maughn says.

According to Maughan, any potential extradition will be expensive and laborious for South African government.

Meanwhile, Ajay's brother Atul Gupta is challenging the freezing of R10-million in his personal bank account.

The asset forfeiture unit said the money was paid from the Estina Dairy project, but Atul Gupta says there's not enough proof.

He was apparently in Dubai when he signed the affidavit in his court application dated 8 February.

Indian media are reporting that Ajay Gupta has been spotted in India at a wedding. There's a number of reports suggesting that he's out of the country.
