Cape Town British Consulate denies asking for water usage exemptions

The British Consulate General has denied writing to the City of Cape Town to ask for water usage exemptions. This, after a draft letter, was leaked, claiming to be from 'permanent diplomatic and consular missions in Cape Town'

Edward Roman says he didn't write the letter and the City has confirmed that it did not receive such letter from the British Consulate.

Roman says the consulate is completely on board with water-saving efforts.

We dont want to be exempt from anything. We absolutely want to support the authorities here and ensure that we can work toward the best possible outcomes.

Edward Roman, British Consul General

Last month the City of Cape Town confirmed certain areas would be exempt from Day Zero, in order to ‘keep trade and tourism going’.

The CBD is one of those areas where taps won't be turned off.

We really are supporting the city... we've been helping Wesgro get the message out to British businesses and tourists, saying please continue coming to the Cape and doing business here, but respect all the water restrictions.

Edward Roman, British Consul General
