Convicted murderers of Winnie Rust went on a shopping spree using her bank cards

The two Wellington men convicted of the murder of author Winnie Rust in will appear on Tuesday in mitigation of sentence in the Western Cape High Court.

Nigel, 19 and his uncle Johannes Plaaitjies robbed and killed 77-year-old Rust in her home in May 2016.

EWN reporter Shamiela Fisher, says the defence called the probation officer who explained that during the interview with teenager Nigel Plaaitjies, while in custody, he had shown genuine remorse for his actions.

It has emerged that Rust took Nigel and his family under her wing when he was a little boy. She took care of him financially, reports Fisher.

They were part of the family, that's the impression we got... They were well looked after.

The probation officer said that he is showing remorse and that if he could turn back the hands of time he would've changed his actions.

She is of the opinion that he could have acted under the influence of his uncle because he is older.

Nigel told the probation officer that he was sent upstairs to steal money and a laptop and when he came back downstairs he found Rust dead and tied up.

However, his uncle's version is that the plan was to rob and kill her.

It also emerged in court that immediately after the murder the two men went on a shopping spree for clothing, cellphones, and groceries using the deceased bank cards.
