WATCH: Ramaphosa's morning walks 'a stroke of PR genius', says sports marketer

President Cyril Ramaphosa is putting his best foot forward with his casual public appearances and outdoor activities.

On Tuesday, Ramaphosa took a brisk 5km walk from Gugulethu to Athlone, and was joined by residents as he power-walked between the two communities.

Last week, he was seen on morning stroll with former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel at the Sea Point promenade, just hours after Jacob Zuma resigned.

He was also spotted walking at the East London beachfront days before delivering the ANC’s 8 January statement.

Sports marketer Andrew Ross says Ramaphosa is using smart PR tactics to solidify his brand, which is built on integrity, trust and accessibility.

Ross says that the President is seeking ways to resonate with the citizenry and differentiate himself from his predecessor, who hardly ventured outdoors without his security detail.

Whether you're cynical or not, it's a stroke of PR genius.

I personally would love to believe that Cyril is getting down in the trenches, I think it's a physical interpretation of the difference he wants to bring to the Presidency by connecting with the public.

Brand Cyril has clearly thought this through. This is not accidental or a coincidence.

This is a logical fit, it feels real. It may be constructed in the boardroom of PR company or by his people, but it feels right.

It something that he's clearly getting into and enjoying. He's connecting with the voter.
