Workers shutdown Gupta-owned Optimum mine amid job uncertainty

Approximately 2 000 miners have shut down operations at the Gupta-owned Optimum coal mine in Mpumalanga.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says mineworkers want clarity on the future of the company and their job security.

This comes amid claims that the company may not have money to pay salaries at the end of this month.

Optimum coal mine owner, Ajay Gupta, remains a fugitive facing arrest and his whereabouts are unknown.

At the same time, his brother Atul is challenging a preservation order valued at R10 million.

NUM's Livhuwani Mammburu says members have been frustrated by levels of anxiety, confusion and uncertainty.

He explains that members want answers from management over the mine's future.

Our members marched here at the Optimum coal mine in Mpumalanga to handover a memorandum of their grievances to the CEO.

Unfortunately, they were informed that the CEO is in Joburg preparing salaries for Friday.

Members decided that enough is enough because management was not responding to questions.
