NICD: Listeriosis cases rapidly rising in SA, death toll at 172

National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has warned that the listeriosis outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down in South Africa with 172 confirmed deaths.

Head of the Centre for Enteric Diseases at NICD, Dr Juno Thomas, says a source needs to be identified in order to stop the spread of the disease.

We need to know the food type that is contaminated, that people are eating and stop the production, distribution and issue a recall if possible, to get it out of the market.

It is important to note that all provinces are reporting cases and when we do special genetic testing on the bacteria that's causing illness in patients from across the country, it is the exact same strain.

This means that people throughout the country are exposed to a particular food type, that is widely available and easily accessible.
