National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has warned that the listeriosis outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down in South Africa with 172 confirmed deaths.
Head of the Centre for Enteric Diseases at NICD, Dr Juno Thomas, says a source needs to be identified in order to stop the spread of the disease.

It is important to note that all provinces are reporting cases and when we do special genetic testing on the bacteria that's causing illness in patients from across the country, it is the exact same strain.— Dr Juno Thomas, Head of the Centre for Enteric Diseases at NICD

Listeriosis is caused by a bacterium found in soil, water and vegetation.
Every person that is diagnosed with Listeriosis are interview to find out what kind of food types they've been consuming in order to find the root cause.
