The rise and fall of the #Guptas

Daily Maverick's Jessica Bezuidenhout speaks to CapeTalk's Koketso Sachane about how the mighty Gupta family fell from power.

Workers at the Gupta-owned Optimum coal mine in Hendrina, Mpumalanga have downed tools over uncertainties of salary payments.

The mine has been placed in business rescue and workers are bearing the brunt.

Bank of Baroda was the last financial institution to close Gupta bank accounts in South Africa which is impacting the mine.

According to Bezuidenhout, Optimum is going through severe financial distress because they don't have a bank at their disposal to continue with their business operations.

The Guptas were doing fine until the state capture revelation started hitting them and suddenly they didn't have a bank.

Jessica Bezuidenhout, Daily Maverick reporter

This made it incredibly difficult for people to be seen doing business with them. Besides, how do you do business with anyone who doesn't have a bank account.

Jessica Bezuidenhout, Daily Maverick reporter

As a journalist, Bezuidenhout has been involved in a thorough investigation of the Guptas and their assets and provides insightful analysis and information. Take a listen to the details in her interview below:
