Water crisis prompts residents in Mitchells Plain to start Futsal Club for youth

Youngsters living in the Cape Flats are often encouraged to turn to sports to keep them away from the rampant gang culture and negative influences that have plagued the community.

A group of concerned soccer lovers from Mitchells Plain have banded together to start their own Futsal Club called the Wolverines. The club seeks to engage with the youth and tackle social problems in the community.

Wolverines chairperson Grant Gordon chats to #WeekendBreakfast host Africa Melane about the Futsal Club, and how the water crisis has affected sports in the community.

Gordon says that they are facing a water crisis in Cape Town and this has a negative impact on sports.

The concern we had as parents is that our kids are sitting on corners, going into negative elements and not having anything to keep themselves occupied with.

Grant Gordon, Wolverines chairperson

Gordon adds that Futsal helps children make better decisions, and due to the nature of the game, it also helps them think quickly.

We have a lot of underprivileged children that cannot afford to buy themselves soccer gear, and our aim is to say to these children that money shouldn’t be an issue.
