In this segment of South Africans Doing Great Things, Gugu chats to Zara Nijzink-Laurie about her research in menstrual cups

Young South African scientist Zara Nijzink-Laurie recently participated in the prestigious Taiwan International Science Fair and took home second prize for her project which involved an awareness of the menstrual cup.

Nijzink-Laurie says that when she heard the shocking truth that some girls miss school each month because of their periods, she decided to research the matter further and that’s how she found out about the menstrual cup.

Nijzink-Laurie adds that she wanted to find out how many girls knew about it.

When I first got my period, I thought there had to be a better way to handle it besides using pads and tampons.

I was going to see if information that I give the girls will help persuade them to try and use the menstrual cup or not.
