'We never had warning of activities at 'sex cult' ministry: MEC

The MEC for Safety and Liaison in the Eastern Cape claims Parliament never received a report, warning about the activities of the Mancoba Seven Angels Ministry in Ngcobo.

100 people, including girls as young as 12, alleged to have been kept as sex slaves, were freed at the church on Friday night following a police raid.

But the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural‚ Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL) says it warned a Parliamentary portfolio committee about the church in 2016.

MEC Weziwe Tikana says she has not received the CRL report.

We have been looking for the report. We never received the report from CRL. We never monitored the churches activities.

We rescued all the young ones to the place of safety by June 16th. It means then, that other people went there [since June 16th] with their young ones.

Speaking on Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa, Tikana says some those who were rescued at the weekend want to return, but that church services have now ceased.

She says they are hoping for an interdict to demolish the church buildings.

The investigation is still going on. The case cannot be immediately closed.

It is alleged the church leaders were the masterminds behind Tuesday night’s massacre of five police officers at the police station in the tiny Eastern Cape town of Engcobo.
