UK govt issues warning but local expert says SA terror attack unlikely

The UK government has issued warnings to its citizens planning to visit South Africa of possible attacks on South African soil.

This follows the kidnapping of an elderly British couple a few weeks ago by terror group ISIS near Vryheid in northern Kwa Zulu Natal.

According to EWN UK Correspondent, Gavin Grey, the couple's names which were withheld from the public since their disappearance, has been released as horticulturalists Rod and Rachel Saunders.

It is reported that roughly R380 000 has been withdrawn from their account and their Land Cruiser Jeep was found about 220km away.

The UK foreign and commonwealth website has been updated in the last 24 hours.... the main headline for that is that terrorists are likely to carry out attacks in South Africa.

Director for Southern Africa Operations at Terrorism, Research & Analysis Consortium, Jasmine Opperman says speculation about the couple's disappearance being linked to ISIS is not reliant on any facts.

I think what we are experiencing here is an criminal act...

Jasmine Opperman, Director for Southern Africa Operations at Terrorism, Research & Analysis Consortium

Opperman says it is highly unlikely that South Africa could experience a terrorist attack but the fact that the country is vulnerable at this point, cannot be ignored.
