They’re back! Pravin Gordhan, Nhlanhla Nene returns to clean up an unholy mess

To have a Finance Minister like Nhlanhla Nene, who knows how to say ‘no’, which got him fired in the first place, is quite a relief… he might find himself saying ‘no’ quite a lot in the next few years.

Pippa Green

Around DD Mabuza, you cannot get around the fact that he was elected Deputy President of the ANC in December... you’ve got to respect electoral choices… Ramaphosa didn’t have much of an option… he simply had to do it.

Nhlanhla Nene has returned as Finance Minister, in a move broadly welcomed.

His previous term ended when former President Jacob Zuma unceremoniously sacked him, causing widespread anger and a selloff of South African assets.

At the time Zuma falsely claimed as reason for the sacking Nene’s supposed nomination for a position at the Brics Bank, which never materialised.

Nene was hailed by financial analysts, abroad and at home, as an effective, strong minister who criticised several Government spending initiatives, including plans for nuclear power.

Pravin Gordhan is the newly appointed Public Enterprises Minister, a crucial portfolio considering the dire state of state-owned enterprises and the grave danger they pose to the economy.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Pippa Green (Author of "Choice not Fate: The Life and Times of Trevor Manuel”) and JP Landman (Political and Trend Analyst at University of Free State).

Pippa Green

Pippa Green

As far as Bathabile Dlamini is concerned, it’s one retention I don’t understand…

JP Landman

He had to bring in Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma … she’s formidable… and she’s from KZN… she can do very well...

JP Landman

The President has to deliver on his promise have having a smaller cabinet and government… We don’t need 35 ministers… He missed an opportunity…

JP Landman

The High Court unanimously found the Minister of Home Affairs [Malusi Gigaba] to be in violation of the Constitution…
