ANC may be forced to make quick concessions on land expropriation - analyst

Associate Professor at University of Johannesburg,Mcebisi Ndletyana says the African National Congress (ANC) might be forced into a corner to make sudden concessions on the issue of land expropriation, as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) push to have Section 25 of the Constitution amended.

The EFF has tabled a motion in favour of changing the so-called property rights clause and wants all land to be owned by the state.

Ndletyana says it is a little too late.

His [Julius Malema] main plan really, was to paint the ANC as a captured party, a moderate party that has sold out, and the ANC was painted into a corner to prove their radical credentials.

Mcebisi Ndletyana, Associate Professor - Dept of Politics and International Relations at University of Johannesburg

The ANC has set by all means to appear moderate, not to do anything stupid to turn international opinion against it because our revolution was meant to be a very savvy and moderate, lawful revolution. This is where ANC patience have come back to haunt them in a way.

Mcebisi Ndletyana, Associate Professor - Dept of Politics and International Relations at University of Johannesburg

Farmers and the white society generally didn't listen to this issue of land redistribution and the ANC did not want to pursue it because they wanted to placate international opinion, but at the same time you had redress and social justice being put at the back burner.

Mcebisi Ndletyana, Associate Professor - Dept of Politics and International Relations at University of Johannesburg

And with time you have had these demagogue, populist movements like the EFF, exploiting a very legitimate pain and now it would seem like people are going to be forced into a corner to make very quick concessions. Its too late because now you have a potentially explosive political situation.
