'Ramaphosa's anti state capture agenda is an opportunity to unite the alliance'

Newly appointed Transport Minister and South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary general, Blade Nzimande, says President Cyril Ramaphosa's fight against state capture provides a meaningful platform to reunite the alliance.

The communist party is amongst those who have been critical of the influence of the Gupta family.

Commenting on Ramaphosa's new cabinet, Nzimande says the primary challenge is to dismantle criminal networks within state owned entities.

The primary challenge now is to dismantle these networks, some of which are criminal to be quite honest, around state capture. So it is very important that President Ramaphosa is positioning himself this way and we actually support it.

On his new portfolio, Nzimande says transformation is needed to resolve constraints on transportation for poor people.

In the medium long term, what we need to do is transform the spatial geography of apartheid. That will contribute significantly.

Central to the communist party's view is that we need a reliable public transport system, because it is the working class that is in these taxis, trains and so on. Those things will actually require attention.
