CapeTalk listener tells of his shock at witnessing a waitress drinking from a glass meant for a customer.

A CapeTalk listener has spoken of his shock at seeing a waitress drink from a glass and then hand it to a patron at a Cape Town restaurant.

Alan G from Claremont relayed his experience to Kieno Kammies on Friday.

I saw a waitress drinking from a glass at the bar and didn't make much of it. But my wife followed her and watched her hand it to one of the customers downstairs.

Alan G, CapeTalk Listener

I called the manger and explained that we saw a waitress having a sip form the drink and he said it's company policy that our waitresses taste certain drinks before they are given out to customers to make sure they are made correctly.

Alan G, CapeTalk Listener

Kieno spoke to the owner of the restaurant, Tracey Burke, who said it is not company policy.

She says an investigation was carried out and the waitress in question, as well as the manager, were called in to account.

The staff member admitted it and said they dont know why they did it and that they know that it is not company policy. From that we called all staff members and we clarified the restaurant procedures.

She says the staff member in question has been through a disciplinary process and has been demoted.

It is not company policy that staff should drink from a glass that's being served to a customer or from any other item that would go out to a customer.
