What next for Eskom after top execs linked to corruption resign

Two people linked to mismanagement and corruption at Eskom tendered their resignation on Thursday.

Former public enterprises minister Lynne Brown resigned as a Member of Parliament while head of information at Eskom, Sean Maritz also handed in his resignation.

Maritz was suspended pending an investigation into a letter he wrote to consultancy firm McKinsey, in which he said that that the contract it had with Eskom was, in fact, lawful, which was contrary to what the utility had stated.

On the other hand, Public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane found that Brown misled Parliament when she said Trillian had no contracts with Eskom.

EWN Gia Nicolaides gives analysis of the recent happenings at the state power utility, Eskom.

Ultimately she (Brown) said that it was Eskom that misled and she inadvertently misled Parliament.

There are still more questions hanging... why didn't the minister at the time take more care in terms of looking at the kind of management and the information she was given by Eskom?

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Anoj Singh as well as Matshela Koko resigned just before going through a disciplinary process at Eskom so that hearing because it is internal, it becomes null and void - ultimately Eskom has nothing to do with these former executives who have resigned.

But they can still take legal action, they can also pursue criminal charges based on the strength of their case and how they were going to hold them accountable at Eskom.
