Nehawu available to negotiate but blames Mokonyane

On Thursday, the National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers’ Union, the largest union in the public sector, embarked on a strike at Department of Water and Sanitation offices and facilities throughout the country.

National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers’ Union Speaking to Ray White on The Midday Report, Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba, says the union has reached a deadlock over a dispute with management at the bargaining chamber.

He explains that the strike is over unpaid bonuses by the department, a lack of protective clothing and an inadequate working environment.

He says the union gave the department seven days strike notice so that it would not be adversely affected.

We are always available to negotiate. the department knows where to find us.

Khaya Xaba, Nehawu spokesperson

National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers’ Union' s (Nehawu) spokesperson Khaya Xaba also spoke to The Afternoon Drive with Stephen Grootes and said that they blame the former Water and Sanitation minister Nomvula Mokonyane as she is the one that milked the department dry.

The fact that she has been moved to the communications department does not absolve her of the mess she has created in that department, therefore whatever wrong she did she must still account for. We feel she left a mess in that department, the reason that department is close to bankruptcy is because of her doing and as the accounting officer, she must account for the mess.
